Rayburn Blackmoore Appoints Peter Alleyne as Director of Legal Aid
The Minister for National Security and Home Affairs, Rayburn Blackmoore, has announced Peter Alleyne as the new director of the Legal Aid in Dominica. A well-respected attorney at law, Alleyne has been practising law for many decades and he is billed to resume duties on September 1, 2020.
Minister Blackmoore expressed confidence in the knowledge and ability of Alleyne to provide quality legal representation to Dominicans through the Legal Aid Clinic, adding that his presige and wealth of experience will serve him well in the new office.
“I am confident, that Mr. Alleyne will bring the prestige and wealth of knowledge befitting to such an office,” Blackmoore said. “Under his stewardship, a review of the services and fee structure will be undertaken.”
The minister stated that the DLP administration had always been concerned about the legal plights of poor Dominicans who cannot afford to hire private attorneys. He said with Alleyne heading the Legal Aid Clinic, the government will be better equipped to provide affordable legal assistance to vulnerable citizens.
The Dominica Legal Aid Clinic will be able to help many Dominicans in areas of marital divorce, land transfers, land disputes, children custody, and family issues among others.
Blackmoore clarified that every Dominican should have access to legal representation regardless of their economic and social statuses, and this is the only enablement that can guarantee equity and justice for everyone in the country. He added that the Skerrit-led administration will give the Legal Aid Clinic a level playing ground to operate so that justice can be served for all.
