Recalled Diabetes Drug Metformin Not Sold or Distributed In Dominica
Following the declaration by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the diabetes drug Metformin should be recalled, the Ministry of Health in Dominica has assured the general public that the drug is not sold or distributed in the country. The FDA issued a recall order for Metformin (Extended Release) after studies found it contained cancer-causing agents in high quantity.
The ER Metformin recalled by the FDA is manufactured by Markans Pharma and distributed under the brand name Time-Cap Tabs Inc. The medication is used to treat diabetes and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. The Dominica Health Ministry said the government did not procure the drug and it is not available for purchase in established chemist stores across the island.
“An investigation was launched by the Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment and we can now reassure the general public that the Metformin being recalled, Extended Release (ER) Metformin brand name Time Cap Tabs Inc., is neither procured by the Ministry of Health nor sold in the established pharmacies in Dominica,” the government agency wrote.
The ministry urged diabetics and other patients using Metformin in Dominica to continue using their drugs as prescribed while also adhering to other health management guidelines prescribed by their personal physicians. Jolly Pharmacy issued a release assuring their customers that the particular recalled drug is not stocked in their pharmacy and that customers should continue their medications under the supervision of professional healthcare physicians.
