Residential and Commercial Apartments Ready for 51 Families in Roseau

The leadership of Melissa Poponne-Skerrit as the parliamentary representative for Roseau Central has produced commercial and residential apartments for 51 families in the constituency. Located at the Upper River Bank area of the constituency, Poponne-Skerrit said select 51 families will be moving into the completed apartments this February.

The parliamentary member said more than 1,000 applications were received to have houses alloted to them by the government, but only the most deserving families will be homeowners for the present time. According to her, “this has been the most pressing issue for the constituents of Roseau Central; housing has been their main issue and this is why we fast-tracked this project.”

Ms. Poponne-Skerrit also revealed that the drainage problem in Virgin Lane and River Street will be addressed very soon, while Great George Street will be remodelled with wheelchair access, smart lighting, and underground utility cable among other enhancements. She added that construction will begin on the new Roseau health centre in July and the facility will be sited at the old Roseau Infant School.

MP Poponne-Skerrit equally revealed that her administration looks forward rehabilitating the historic Barracoon Building which was constructed in Roseau in 1760. The ancient building was used to house slaves after their arrival from Africa during the slave trade, and is the only surviving slave-holding barracoon left intact in the Caribbean. It was impacted by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
