Dominica and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are set to inaugurate the construction of the Goodwill Secondary School (GSS) on September 6, 2023, symbolizing a significant step forward in the island’s education infrastructure. GSS, a school ravaged nearly six years ago by the unforgiving Hurricane Maria, stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of Dominica’s commitment to rebuilding.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed that the PRC, in a collaborative effort with Dominica, has embarked on an ambitious mission to reconstruct various elementary schools across the island. Following the harrowing 2017 natural disaster, China pledged its support for Dominica’s school restoration. In May 2020, an agreement for school reconstruction was formally inked between Dominica’s Ministry of Education and the PRC.
Moreover, the People’s Republic of China has generously offered grant support to further fortify Dominica’s development. Prime Minister Skerrit expressed the timeliness of this contribution, especially given the worldwide economic challenges arising from factors such as natural disasters and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Skerrit emphasized that the government has designated this funding exclusively for the enhancement of sports and youth development within Dominica. In the coming weeks, comprehensive plans to bolster youth enterprises and promote sports, as well as develop the talents of young Dominicans in various fields, will be unveiled.
The grant assistance from China will support several proposed projects, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art synthetic track in Portsmouth and the construction of a modern indoor sports facility. These initiatives aim to provide a platform for young athletes to hone their skills and foster a culture of physical activity and wellness.
In light of the enduring and fruitful relationship between Dominica and China, dating back to 2004, Prime Minister Skerrit expressed profound gratitude for the People’s Republic of China’s unwavering support.
This partnership has yielded invaluable contributions to Dominica, spanning diverse sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure restoration after natural disasters, healthcare facilities enhancement, and the construction of vital sports infrastructure.
Prime Minister Skerrit extended his heartfelt appreciation to Ambassador Lin and the entire team at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for their continuous support. He eagerly looks forward to further strengthening the bond between Dominica and China for the mutual benefit of both nations.
The forthcoming groundbreaking ceremony for GSS not only signifies the resurrection of a vital educational institution but also marks a poignant chapter in Dominica’s enduring partnership with China, a collaboration that continually enhances the nation’s resilience and development.
