Seamoss Farmers Meet to Discuss Challenges and Income Opportunities
About 30 seamoss farmers from Calibishie, Grand Bay, and Woodford Hill met with representatives from the government and private sectors to discuss the challenges and opportunities inherent in seamoss production.
Held under the auspices of the Farmers Exchange Meeting at the Atlantique View Resort and Spa, the conference took place on Thursday, February 9. The organizers said part of the focus of the meeting included developing new strategies for cultivating a new and more lucrative species of seamoss identified as Eucheuma cottonii.
The conference will enable farmers to also share their experiences and challenges in the cultivation of sea moss with a view to finding a general solution that works for everybody. Attendees also hoped to be introduced to regional and international buyers of sea moss products for improved incomes.
A FAO Caribbean Value Chain Development Specialist, Bree Romuld, said the meeting enabled attendees to foster lasting relationships necessary for commercialization of seamoss production in Dominica. She said the conference also facilitated “building a sustainable, resilient, and efficient seamoss value chain and a step in the right direction.”
She added that importation of seamoss products from neighbouring Caribbean territories will equally be reduced when commercial production takes off in Dominica.
