Dillon Simon and Thea Lafond will be flying Dominica’s flag at the forthcoming Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Simon will represent the country in shot-put and Lafond in triple jumping. Both athletes are based abroad and ready to do the country proud when the games begin on July 26.
Simon was coached by Curtley Bynoe, a professional athlete who passed away in February. During a recent media interview, Simon said he missed his late trainer and found it challenging to continue without him. He added however that he will make the best of his training program with a view to coming tops at the games.
Apart from trying to excel at shot-putting, Simon said he’d been training hard at technical throwing and weightlifting. He said his ultimate goal is to win at the PanAm Games after he managed to reach the finals at the commonwealth games.
Thea Lafond, a Dominican-born athlete participated in past Summer Olympics and Commonwealth games. According to her, she is in her best frame at the moment and positive about achieving her longest jumps ever at the Peru games. She hopes to win medals at the games and enjoy herself in the most professional manner possible.
“I am geared up and ready to go,” Lafond told reporters.
While commenting on the development, several Dominicans berated the Labor party for spending over $21 million to be re-elected in the last elections, saying a considerable part of the money could have been spent on constructing a sporting stadium for track and field events in the country.
