Skerrit Announces Steps to Assist Dominicans Facing U.S. Deportation

Amid growing tensions on the U.S. immigration front, Dominica is taking proactive measures to safeguard the rights of its citizens in American custody. The government has initiated a process to expedite documentation for Dominicans facing deportation, ensuring they can return home with the proper travel documents.

In recent weeks, the U.S. has ramped up its immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s directive, leading to the arrest of thousands of unauthorized immigrants nationwide. Among those affected are a small number of Dominicans, reportedly three or four currently in custody, who lack the necessary documentation for repatriation. Officials say the government is now assisting these citizens, providing them with the required travel documents to facilitate their return to Dominica.

The effort is part of a broader government initiative to protect the rights of Dominicans living abroad. The process includes verifying the identities of those in U.S. custody and coordinating closely with the U.S. State Department.

Authorities have indicated that the U.S. government has identified roughly 104 Dominicans facing eviction from the country due to various immigration issues. Although the names of those involved are not yet disclosed, the government is committed to ensuring that every eligible Dominican can exercise their right to return home.

At a recent meeting with party officials and community leaders, Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit emphasised the importance of this initiative. “We are determined that no Dominican, whether residing here or abroad, will be disenfranchised,” he stated, stressing that the government’s actions are driven by a deep commitment to its citizens.

Plans are underway to fill key diplomatic positions, including the role of Counsel General in New York, to coordinate efforts with the U.S. better and streamline the return process.

As the government works closely with its U.S. counterparts to secure safe repatriation for those in custody, Dominica is positioning itself as a nation that values and protects the rights of its diaspora. This initiative marks another step in safeguarding the welfare of Dominicans, ensuring that every citizen has a clear pathway home regardless of the challenges on the international front.
