Skerrit endorses Darroux as DLP Petite Savanne Candidate over Marva Williams

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has chosen Dr. Kenneth Darroux as the DLP candidate for Petite Savanne Constituency over Marva Williams. Darroux is the minister of health and had earlier indicated his loss of interest in elective positions when Skerrit chose Williams over him.

But with Skerrit’s volte-face, Darroux is back in the game and Williams out. The prime minister said he was compelled to return the health minister to the game out of deference for the overwhelming call made for him by people in Petite Savanne.

“I want to announce this evening, the return of Darroux to the fray of candidates in the upcoming general elections,” Skerrit said in Goodwill during the launch of Joseph Isaac’s candidacy for Roseau North. “Dr. Darroux had initially expressed a desire to step away from elective politics but the call of the people has been overwhelming.”

PM Skerrit made it clear that his administration had discussed this move with Marva Williams and she had agreed to step down for Darroux.

“We have discussed this with sister Marva Williams and we had agreed that the voice of the people must be respected. Accordingly, sister Marva shall suspend her efforts to be elected at this point and Dr. Darroux shall, as of tomorrow, reassume the position of the candidate in the Petite Savanne consistency,” Skerrit stated.

Darroux expressed his appreciation to the prime minister and thanked him for the opportunity to be fielded again. He also thanked the constituency for calling for his reinstatement into the political fray, saying he had missed everyone. Then he noted the progress made so far with the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital which is billed for opening in August.

The emergence of your brand new state of the art hospital, one which the critics referred to as an election gimmick, one which they said would never happen but this is what we are all about, forever seeking ways to enhance the lives of our citizens, working tirelessly to better the standard of living of the ordinary man and woman and our effort to date is commendable.

He disclosed that there will also be two buildings dedicated to treating accident victims and other emergencies. He said there will also be a radiology department with modern state of the art imaging equipment such as CT scan and digital ultrasound machines. He added there will be a new MRI machine as well as a High Intensive Focus Ultrasound (HIFU) for minimally invasive surgeries.

Ms. Williams cannot be reached yet for comments on the recent development.
