Skerrit Govt Signs Agreement for Construction of Int’l Airport with MMCE

The agreement for the construction of the proposed international airport has been signed. The contract was signed by the government of Dominica and Montreal Management Consultant (MMCE) at the Windsor Park Stadium. The signing of the agreement marks a forward movement for the government to make the proposed airport a reality.

After today, the airport will begin to rise out of the ground, then from the ground to the air. And I give you this solemn assurance that planes will land here direct from Europe and the United States of America in 2025. Today we take one step closer to fully claiming the new prosperity which will be ours. Dominica will have a modern international airport equipped with air bridges and fully outfitted to receive international passengers and cargo.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

Minister for Blue and Green Economy, Fidel Grant, said the completion of the international airport will bring economic diversification to Dominica and that it will reposition the country for greatness in the Caribbean and beyond. He said it will facilitate import and export and generate a rewarding thirst for global travel among the population. He urged the people to reposition themselves for the good that is approaching.

Parliamentary member for the Roseau Central Constituency, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, also said the airport will transform the economic and political landscape in Dominica for the better. While the CEO of MMCE, Dr. Anthony Haiden, said the most sophisticated construction expertise will be deployed to building the airport. He said it will be completed within five years and will make Dominica a regional leader by far.

Its success, completion, and subsequent operation will have a transcending effect on the country and will literally reshape the future of Dominica.

When news surfaced that the opposition was going to stage a protest at the 4pm time of the signing, National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore warned that demonstrators would be arrested and dealt with according to the law. The opposition aggrieved that the financing measures for the airport construction are not agreeable to them and that the government allegedly awarded the contract to MMCE without giving room to local contractors to bid on the project.
