Skerrit Is a True Friend of China with Genuine Concerns for the People’s Needs
Chinese Ambassador says Skerrit is a true friend of China with genuine concerns for the people’s needs at heart. While celebrating the People’s Republic of China’s 15 years of diplomatic ties with the Commonwealth of Dominica, Ambassador Lu Kun credited Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s resolve to strenghten ties with China with a view to empowering the peoples of Dominica.
Kun said his country has supported Dominica in its development drive through the China Aid project because of Skerrit’s love for his peoples. The Chinese official said all projects carried out by his government in Dominica were people-based and not government-based. This means the projects were done for the people’s needs and not to honor or promote the government in any way.
The Windsor Park Stadium, the State College, Newtown Primary School, York Valley Bridge and others are all projects for the benefit of the people.
China’s Ambassador to Dominica: Lu Kun
According to Kun, countries around the world beg China to execute capital and construction projects for the singular benefits of prime ministers and high political figures in government. But the prime minister of Dominica never requested China to construct buildings or any infrastructure for his personal benefits, but for the overall benefits of the common people.
“Prime Minister Skerrit regards China as an important partner for economic cooperation,” Kun revealed. “He is a good and true friend of China. The well-being, benefit and the needs of the people are the priority of the Prime Minister. He serves the people heart and soul.”
Skerrit responded by saying his friendship and respect for China is grounded in his acknowledgement of the One China Policy. This means Dominica recognizes the nationhood of the People’s Republic of China and not Taiwan which is also officially known as the Republic of China.
The UWP administration which was in power before Skerrit’s DLP government came to power recognized Taiwan as true China. But the present administration recognizes the PRC or Mainland China as the true China. And PRC’s Ambassador Kun endorsed this relation.
“The Prime Minister himself strictly adheres to the One China principle,” Kun said. “He never had any relations with Taiwan authorities. The Dominica Government relentlessly supports China at the United Nations, the Security Council and other international agencies. They support the Chinese candidates without any preconditions.”
Skerrit said his government remains committed to the government of the PRC and not the Republic of China which is Taiwan.
“We adhere to the One China Policy as matter of principle and the respect to international law,” Skerrit declared. “We shall assist you and your country in your efforts for the peaceful reunification of all of China. We say so without any fear of any country or citizen of this world because we stand on principle when it comes to recognizing the One China Policy. This Government and I as Prime Minister shall remain steadfast in that respect.”
