Skerrit Justifies Spending $2.3 Million to Build a Bailey Bridge in Bagatelle
The government is spending $2.3 million to construct a Bailey bridge in Bagatelle. PM Roosevelt Skerrit has justified the construction of the bridge given that there are few residences occupied by people at the other side of the bridge. The prime minister said the original settlers at the other end of the bridge are used to their homes and holdings and the government must not relocate them unnecessarily.
The construction of the Bailey bridge will provide easy access to Bagatelle village and the surrounding regions, and this is one bridge that the people of the area had been begging the government to help them construct for many years.
Skerrit said spending $2.3 million to build the bridge is a massive investment for the village of Bagatelle, and that many people would prefer to have the money spent on other projects. He said constructing the bridge will keep the people of Bagatelle in their ancestral lands and aid the development of the village and surrounding region, and that relocating the people to this side of the bridge is counter-productive to the plans fo the government for the area.
I know there are people who have felt that the monies could have been spent otherwise, because there are very few homes beyond this bridge and many people felt that we could have relocated these residents across the bridge, therefore the cost of investment would be much lower than we are investing now.
Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica
He said the government will proceed with the construction of the Bailey bridge and also consider other ways to bring sustainable development to Bagatelle and beyond.
