Skerrit responds to Linton’s call for civil disobedience, accuses him of confusion and division. Prime Minister Skerrit on state-owned DBS Radio called on all Dominicans to disregard Lennox Linton’s call for passive resistance, dubbing him a confusionist and divisionist. Skerrit said the opposition leader is only trying to chase away tourists and impoverish the people if his plans scale through.
Linton in a statement called for civil disobedience or passive resistance to Skerrit to account for an alleged $1.2 billion CBI funds purportedly not included in the 2019-2020 national budget presented to parliament in July. Linton said the DLP administration must also clean the electors list as well as issue voting ID cards to the people.
Civil disobedience is a situation where the people refuse to obey the government or any ruling authority without resorting to violence or active opposition. Its main objective is to force the ruling powers to concede to what the people want.
Skerrit said a call for passive resistance is an invitation to anarchy and misrule. He said Linton is actually inviting the people to break the law, and no law-abiding and self-respecting Dominicans should obey such a call.
“He is seeking to confuse the people and he is also seeking to bring confusion in the country, and I believe every law abiding, every conscientious concerned Dominican needs to put aside partisanship and condemn this thing,” Skerrit said. “A country is built by a vision and a plan, and unfortunately Mr. Linton does not have a vision or a plan.”
The prime minister further stated that tourists will lose faith in a country where its leaders call for civil disobedience because public unrest and disorder may result to undermine the safety of the citizens.
“It’s a deliberate attempt to seek to undermine the opportunities and the well-being and the way of life of Dominicans,” Skerrit said.
