Skerrit Rewards Thea Lafond $200,000 for Winning Gold Medal
PM Roosevelt Skerrit has announced a EC$200,000 reward for Thea Lafond for winning gold at the NACAC Senior Championships in the Bahamas. Lafond won the medal on Sunday at the Women’s Triple Jump after winning a silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Championships last month.
At the Commonwealth Games, Lafond won the silver medal by jumping 14.49m behind USA’s Kenturah Orji who jumped 14.32m to win gold, while Cuba’s Fernandez Velazco won the bronze medal by jumping 14.08m. At NACAC, Lafond jumped 6.43m and Quanesha Burks of the USA jumped 6.75m, while Canada’s Christabel Netty jumped 6.46m and Chanice Porter of Jamaica 6.43m.
Sports Minister Roslyn Paul acknowledged the indefatigable performance of other Dominican athletes at the games and thanked them for making the country proud. Prime Minister Skerrit told lawmakers at parliament that Lafond’s EC$200,000 reward will be deposited in her bank account after a short meeting with her.
We will have a recognition, appreciation, and congratulations to Thea Lafond for having won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games; and now the gold medal – the government of Dominica will give her a monetary gift of EC$200,000. And I want to say to Thea Lafond, if you win gold at the Olympics – it [monetary reward] will be more than that. And so we celebrate her and acknowledge her diligence and commitment to work and to everyone who has supported and provided guidance to her…and so the money will be deposited in her account very soon.
Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica.
