Skerrit Says He Washed Dishes & Mopped Floors to Get an Education

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said he washed dishes and mopped floors to get an education at Viellie Case town hall meeting. He told the people of the constituency that he did all sorts of odd jobs to obtain a quality education, and that he does not want others to pass through the difficulties he passed through to get educated.

“I paid school by washing dishes, mopping floors, and serving people,” Skerrit said. “The challenges which I had to face to earn education I never wanted anyone else to face the same. So I decided to make education available to all by starting policies to help children attain education.”

He referenced the period 1994 to 1997 when the UWP government did little or nothing to promote education in Dominica; compared to now when the DLP administration has made education almost free for all with scholarships and incentives to enhance quality schooling. Skerrit said a handful of students from Viellie Case were in college in 2000 but today, over 55 students from the constituency are in state college and many of them provided with transportation allowances.

Several people have even acquired their master’s degrees in Viellie Case. To facilitate going to school with ease, Skerrit said his administration has repaired damaged roads or built new ones in the constituency and beyond.

The prime minister revealed that his government will be constructing over 6,000 climate resistant homes for people affected by Hurricane Maria and displaced by earlier natural disasters. He said a good number of these modern houses will be built in Viellie Case and other constituencies across the island state. Hundreds of families who have received keys to their own climate-resilient homes have also obtained certificates of titles to establish that the free houses are legally their own and can be inherited by their children and grandchildren.

“For me, as the leader of government and a leader of the party, I feel I have a home and I would like to see everyone have one as well,” PM Skerrit disclosed at the town hall meeting.
