Skerrit Says Individuals Must Take Responsibility for Unplanned Parenthood
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has opined that individuals must take responsibility for unplanned parenthood. He said single mothers and fathers across the country ought to take responsibility for bringing babies into the world – even when pregnancies are not planned for.
He said the government should not be held responsible for the unguarded pleasure of citizens that result into unplanned pregnancies.
Skerrit made this assertion while announcing that the government has forwarded the maintenance bill to parliament for legislation. If passed into law, the Maintenance Bill will consider and increase child support for single women – and men – across the Island. He said his administration will offer financial support to parents who bring children into the world out of wedlock.
The prime minister said the bill has passed through the required processes and is waiting to be passed into law by lawmakers. He said the government will offer financial support to single parents, but this does not exempt people from being responsible for their actions.
He warned that citizens should rise up to their ethical responsibilities when it comes to childbearing and parenthood, and not pass the buck to the government. How soon the legislators will pass the bill into law remains unknown and the actual increment in the amount of child support is not known as at yet.
