Skerrit Says Int’l Airport Will Bring More Jobs
PM Roosevelt Skerrit has assured Dominicans that the proposed international airport will create more jobs for Dominicans and put the country in the international spotlight. He said an international firm has also been hired to begin advertising the project to the entire world in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism. He emphasized that the global promotion of the airport will run simultaneously during its construction.
Skerrit explained that the airport promotion will commence towards the end of this year, and it will serve to highlight other attractions about Dominica. The hired firm will market Dominica to the world and highlight its attractive aspects in a way that will bring more jobs to tour operators and agents as well as attract airlines to the country.
We are not going to wait until the airport is built to start discussing with airlines promoting Dominica and promoting the airport. And so we will be engaging this international firm who will start sharing all of the aspects of Dominica, sites, and the marketing of our country to all of these airlines. So that will start right now and we will share with the designs of the airport and the capacity of the airport. So this will be done while the airport is being built.

The prime minister revealed that geothermal studies will soon commence at the proposed site of the airport in Wesley. He added that access roads to the site are being constructed, and that historical expert Dr. Honeychurch has been contracted to document and preserve the historical heritage of the part of Wesley where the airport will be constructed. He said this is important since Kalinagos have dwelt in the area since ancient times and their artifacts have a lot to tell about the history of the place.
The Dominican leader further revealed that 32 residences are being constructed for Wesleyans who were displaced by the project, and that infrastructure facilities such as access roads, electricity, portable water, and underground amenities have been assigned to local contractors for completion.
There will be a lot of work for Dominicans. People will be engaged. I mean we are going to need a lot of people on this project. It is a massive undertaking and though there will be a main contractor for this; there will be many opportunities for Dominicans to be engaged in this.
