Skerrit Says Ship Carrying Equipment for Int’l Airport Will Dock in February
PM Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that the ship carrying equipment for the construction of the proposed international airport has left China and will berth in Dominica by February. The airport construction was awarded to MMCE in June 2021, and Skerrit said everything is on track to meet the schedule for its completion by early next year.
I am very confident that we will build this airport. There is progress being made; the ship that’s carrying the equipment is on the waters, meaning that it has left China to come in [to Dominica]. The contractors have been building the landing site in the Woodford Hill area. So we are very confident, and I believe the equipment – based on the schedule – will be in Dominica in February of this year.
Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica
The prime minister revealed that the final designs for the international airport are nearing completion since several modifications had to be made. He however disclosed that geotechnical research is also almost completed and work is on schedule for everything to be completed in record time. He also added that the airport laboratory is completed and functioning at the moment, and being used for other scientific investigations across the Island.
Skerrit volunteered that several homes have been constructed to meet the needs of people displaced from the airport area. He said land owners and landlords cooperated with the government to ensure that people are relocated to another safer region to enable the progress of the airport construction. He announced that 26 families have already moved into the new homes constructed by the government, and others will move in once construction is complete.
He stated that the DLP administration had paid compensation to hundreds of families that were displaced from the airport area. He added that in a case where property owners are overseas or dead, the government will finalize payments once their representatives come forward to claim payments. He noted that payments are ongoing with more property owners being identified.
