Skerrit Schedules Election for 100 Days; Lambastes UWP for Non-Performance
Dominican general elections will be holding in the next 100 days, PM Roosevelt Skerrit revealed. He made the announcement while unveiling Kent Edwards as the DLP candidate for the La Plaine constituency. He said he will also be announcing the date for the launching of his wife, Melissa, as the party’s choice for the Roseau Central constituency soon. The prime minister also used the occasion to lambaste the UWP opposition for non-performance in the island state.
The DLP leader said he is positive that that his party will sweep the stakes during the coming elections, adding that potential representatives for each constituency are the best candidates in terms of visions and character. He said Edwards is a doer and not a cheap talker like the leaders of the opposition, saying he has proven his mettle as a community leader.
“There are more than enough of talkers, but we need people who can do things; and Kent Edwards is not just a pharmacist, but indeed a community guy and a go-to guy for the seniors and younger ones,” Skerrit said. “I want voters of La Plaine to vote for the best interest of La Plaine in the coming general elections.”
He then promised to reveal the date for the launching of his wife and tasked people to be ready to vote for the party.
“The series of launches is coming to an end,” Skerrit said. “I promised you in the Valley that I would tell you when I am going to launch Melissa Skerrit. But it’s not that date you want. It is the election date you want. I will say tonight and I certainly couldn’t have said this a few weeks ago. Elections will be held in the next 100 days. So you can do your maths.”
The prime minister and finance minister seized on the opportunity of the occasion to berate the opposition for their antagonism to the CBI programme and other developmental projects executed by the DLP administration. He criticized UWP leader Lennox Linton of using the funds raised from the people after Hurricane Maria to build a lavish house for himself at Morne Daniel. He went on to condemn all representative candidates fielded by the opposition, saying none of them is good for the office they are contending for.
“Sam Christian could not be a candidate for the DLP in 2020,” Skerrit stated. “Joshua Francis could not be…Vernie who is ashamed to be Dominican could not be….and I have not gotten yet to Salybia, the poor girl looks lost she cannot relate to half the people in the Carib Territory.”
He went on to say Clement Marcellin Jr., the most popular and youngest UWP candidate for Vielle Case constituency “will lose his deposit against me in the Vielle Case Constituency.” He stated that the UWP had never initiated any positive project in Dominica nor come up with progressive ideas for moving the country forward. “They have not said how they would raise new funds; how they would sustain current revenue; and they have not even said how they would accelerate the economy and tourism as well as other vital sectors” of the economy, he challenged.
