Skerrit Seeks the Services of Brilliant Youths to Drive Blue Economy Policies
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit requires the services of young and brilliant youths to drive government policies under the new Blue Economy programme. He said young people possess the agility and clout to make Dominica a digital economy and the best in the Caribbean region. He added that Dominica should be a leader within the OECS community and this leadership drive commences with the Blue Economy programmes.
“Likewise, I am looking for some young, bright people to help the government to drive the very important policies and programmes which are captured under the Blue Economy,” Skerrit said.
The OECS disclosed in a statement that the Blue Economy is essential to the growth of an economy, adding that island countries should monetize their waters for national development. The organization stated that geographical waters are national assets that must be explored for job creation, tourism boost, and poverty alleviation.
Skerrit revealed that Dominica has made a fair use of its surrounding waters, claiming that more opportunities abound for revenue generation apart from whale-watching activities.
“Yes, we have the whale watching and we have benefited from this tremendously, but there are a number of other benefits and opportunities and possibilities where the Blue Economy is concerned,” he said.
The prime minister said his government is currently developing a regulatory framework for the deployment of the Blue Economy, and that these will soon be communicated to the people. He said his administration will articulate specific policies and programmes required to transition into a Blue Economy for national betterment.
Skerrit said getting youths involved in the Blue Economy policies and programmes is critical for economic independence, entrepreneurial innovations, and youth development for national growth and positioning.
