Skerrit to Build 150 Houses in Roseau; Spends $5.8 Million in Paix Bouche

The Skerrit-led administration is committed to building 150 residential apartments in Roseau; and two living complexes consisting of 51 apartments are currently undergoing construction. PM Skerrit, who paid an unscheduled visit to the Upper River Bank Housing Development area in Roseau to evaluate the progress of construction works, said his government is dedicated to making Roseau a modern and resilient city.

The prime minister said his administration will be building 150 residences given the difficulties people had been having in the city to acquire land and build their personal houses. He said the entire housing scheme will create a buzzling community of people and also create employment opportunities for the residents of the houses.

As you know Roseau has had a particular challenge for many decades, of people not having access to lands in the city to build. And one of the things that we wanted to do was to maintain the uniqueness of the city of Roseau. So it is important for us to keep and maintain that uniqueness and so the commitment to the city of Roseau is to build 150 residences in total.

Roosevelt Skerrit,  Prime Minister of Dominica

Parliamentary representative for the Roseau Central Constituency, Melissa Skerrit, expressed joy at the government residential plans for her constituency. She said the project will give a facelift to the city, raise the economic standards of the people, and give the occupiers a sense of purpose. Honourable Skerrit said her office has received over 500 applications from people who desire to own the apartments and that her office will be put to a difficult task choosing the final residents.

Meanwhile, 82-year-old Nelly Winston has become the proud owner of a new house in Paix Bouche. She is a lucky winner of one of the more than 60 homes constructed by the government in Paix Bouche Constituency. A former resident of Georgetown, Winston moved into her new home and expressed appreciation to the DLP government for giving her a personal home at her old age.

I am very happy for this gift that I have today. I have to thank God for everything. I use to live in Georgetown and I use to say I was in prison. I was in a house, couldn’t see anyone. I was by myself alone, so I wasn’t very happy. But now I am very happy. I am back at home. I feel comfortable because I’m at home. People can come and visit me, I can see my friends, and I am just very happy you know. I am full up inside.
