Skerrit’s Cabinet Presents Housing and Agricultural Solutions to Kalinago Territory

PM Roosevelt Skerrit and members of his cabinet presented housing and agricultural solutions to the Kalinago Territory. The event was chaired by Reginald Severin, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Housing. Several cabinet members at the event revealed all the government planned to carry out by way of housing and development solutions for indigenous people at the territory.

PM Skerrit revealed that 262 homes will be constructed for natives at the territory next year, with the contractor for the job already briefed. However, numerous housing projects are already in progress at the territory, with almost all of them being executed with CBI funds under the directive of the prime minister.

According to Severin, some of these projects include the –

  • EU Funded 15 Year Home Construction Program
  • Sustainable Housing Solutions Precast Concrete Homes
  • Continuous Home Renovation and Sanitation Program
  • Housing Revolution

The permanent secretary said about 40 -50 homes are to be constructed under the Sustainable Housing Solutions Precast Concrete Homes scheme. More than 60 houses are intended for people dwelling under tents and tarpaulins under the Continuous Home Renovation and Sanitation Program.

With the Housing Revolution program initiated by the Skerrit-led administration, numerous more houses will be repaired, renovated and reconstructed to make them more resilient in the face of unsavoury climate. This will include houses in the scheme, making a total of 262 houses for construction at Kalinago Territory in 2020.

For the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture facilitated the signing of some contracts under the Modernization of Traditional Crops Project. The initiative is targeted at cassava production, Bay Oil and other products in the agricultural industry. Several agricultural facilities will also be remodelled to facilitate food safety and production for regional and regional growth.

To this end, some beneficiaries identified under the Modernization of Traditional Crops Project include –

  • Daniel Frederick
  • Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Francis
  • Josephine Gage
  • Calibishie Cassava Processing Plant
  • Janet Graham

The indigenous people of Kalinago expressed thanks to the DLP administration for the plans, saying they all look forward to a more prosperous 2020 under the government.
