Sports Minister Roselyn Paul Highlights Various Stages of Sports Development
Minister for Sports, Culture and Community Development, Hon. Roselyn Paul, has highlighted the extent of government’s current investment in the sporting sector.
Paul disclosed that rehabilitation is currently ongoing at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Roseau at an estimated cost of $2 million. She noted that lighting and roof are being installed, and the outfield is nearing completion. She said the Internet has been set up and the electronic scoreboard is being installed.
According to her, work has begun at the three proposed hard courts and there will be one hard court for basketball, another for volleyball and netball, and the third for lawn tennis. She said workers are currently marking and surfacing the courts and they are progressing steadily.
Evaluating the current status of the proposed Stockfarm sports complex, Paul said developers MMCE are reviewing the tenders submitted for the work as well as the proposed designs for the multi-purpose sports facility. The same can also be said of the Massacre multi-purpose course which is nearing completion; and the Geneva playing field which is undergoing reconstruction at the moment. Paul said the Geneva playing field will cost over $400,000 to be rehabilitated and that the DFA graciously contributed $150,000 towards the project.
The honourable minister said the Skerrit-led administration is constructing or rehabilitating a number of sporting facilities across the country so that youth development can be guaranteed.
“When we speak of sports development, we also speak of youth development; so there are a number of hard courts that have been upgraded or built around the island, including the Paix Bouche Hard Court, the Savanne Paille Hard Court, the Wesley hard court, and that of Bense and Pichelin,” she said. “So youths around the island have access to these important sporting facilities so that they continue to grow and develop in this area.”
