St John’s Fisherfolk Cooperative Trains in Fish Value Addition

Members of St John’s Fisherfolk Cooperative receive training in value addition of fish.

Six (6) participants successfully completed a three-day value addition training in fish fileting, steaking, smoking and salting, at the CALLS Center in Portsmouth from December 5-7, 2023. This training is part of number of activities under the COASTFISH Project being funded by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) being implemented through the Fisheries Division and is aimed at strengthening the Sustainable Use and Management of Coastal Fisheries Resources within CARICOM Countries.

The primary site for this project is the Cabrits National Park, Portsmouth and environs. The participants were selected based on their involvement in the fish processing and those who showed interest in use of the marine resources.

At the end of the training the participants received a certificate of successful completion and a startup pack with fillet knives, scissors, apron, cutting board, fish cleaners, hair cover and a hand basin.

Based on the final evaluation the participants are positioned to utilize these newly acquired skills to develop their own businesses and improve their livelihoods.

Ms. Donna Mitchel was the lead facilitator of the training.
