St. Lucia’s prime minister donates $100,000 to the Bahamas and leads CARICOM delegation to the hurricane-ravaged country. Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Allen M. Chastanet is also CARICOM’s chairman. He led executives of CARICOM to the Bahamas after his country pledged an assistance of $100,000 to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
St. Lucia’s PM Chastanet maintained regular consultations with the Bahamas Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis before and following the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian. Chastanet said his country and others in the Caribbean community will do everything that is necessary to help the Bahamas recover from the material and human damages caused by Dorian.
Entire villages have been destroyed and hundreds of homes flooded by the storm, with up to 20 lives lost in the ravaging storm.
“Immediately, the emphasis must be on assisting our brothers and sisters in The Bahamas in getting back on their feet in the quickest possible time,” Chastanet said.
CARICOM and OECS Member Countries have pledged their support to the Bahamas following Dorian. Meanwhile, some of the persons and groups in the CARICOM’s Chairman’s delegation to the Bahamas include –
- Barbados Prime Minister, Honourable Mia Mottley
- Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s (CTO) Chairman and Saint Lucia’s Minister for Tourism, Dominic Fedee
- Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque
- Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Ronald Jackson
Although the delegation will assess the situation in the Bahamas and discuss how CARICOM can be of immediate help. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in St. Lucia continues to work closely with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the Regional Security System (RSS) to co-ordinate response activities in the Bahamas.
In a related development, Finland’s new ambassador to Dominica, His Excellency Pertti Ikonen, has presented letter of credence to Dominica’s President Charles A. Savarin.
