Sukie Burn Brain Back in Dominica; to Release Songs Recorded in Grenadian Prison
Shane Edwards, popularly known as Sukie Burn Brain, is back in Dominica after his early release from Grenadian prison. The Dominican rave artiste was sentenced to six months in prison for touching a teenage girl inappropriately on December 26, 2022, but he was released after only four months for “good behaviour.”
The Acting Commisssioner of Prisons in Grenada, Rupert Neckles, said Sukie put on his best behaviour while in prison and even recorded some songs. He said the artiste revealed he plans to release the songs after his incarceration to detail his prison experience. He said he personally spoke to the musician prior to his release and that he pre-qualified himself for early release.
Neckles said Grenadian laws stipulate that a prison inmate could be released for good behaviour if they serve one-third of their prison sentence. “He (Sukie) spent four months of six because prison regulations state that one-third of a sentence handed down by the court would be taken away for good behavior and industry,” the commissioner stated.
Sukie was arrested and charged before a court judge in December while he was in Grenada for a concert. Shortly before his Fire & Ice performance (with Dominican musician Ridge) at the National Cricket Stadium, a Guyanese teenage who came to Grenada from Canada reported to the police that the musician touched her inappropriately. They had both lodged in the same resort hotel.
The police charged the 36-year-old for indecent assault before Judge Teddy St. Louis in St. George, Grenada. The judge declined the bail application of Sukie’s lawyers and he was remanded at the Richmond Hill prison until his case was heard. He faced up to five year in prison but ultimately, he was sentenced to six months behind bars.
Before his ordeal in Grenada, Sukie was facing a threat and battery charge instituted by a woman who alleged that he physically assaulted her. He was locked up for one month in September 2022 until lawyers perfected his bail in October. The case was still pending before a magistrate court in Roseau when the incident in Grenada occurred.
With his return to Dominica, many people reported sighting him and uploading videos of him on social media.
