The Official Launch of Work Online Dominica Cohort 3

The Government of Dominica in partnership with IsraAID, UNDP and the Dominica State College, held a virtual launch of Work OnlineDominica Cohort 3, to officially kick off this program for 2022.

Remarks were delivered by the Minister of Public Works and Digital Economy, Hon. Senator Cassanni Laville, The Digital Transformation Coordinator in the Ministry of Public Works and the Digital Economy, Mr. Robert Tonge, Head of the UNDP Dominica Project Office, Mr. Luis Francisco Thais, IsraAID Country Director, Ms. Nicole King and Programmes Livelihood Manager, Mrs. Cornealia Durand. Work Online Dominica is an initiative by the Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Public Works and the Digital Economy, in collaboration with IsraAID, UNDP, and the Dominica State College.

The goal of this initiative is to teach persons between the ages of 18 to 45 how to get started working online, find new sources of income and increase their financial stability.

Over a 12-week course, 60 participants will be exposed and trained on a roadmap for an alternative pathway of generating income, by leveraging and building their skills to find online gigs and become freelancers.

The current pandemic has highlighted the need to capitalize on employment outside of the traditional (in office) setting and created opportunities to train individuals with skills that are in high demand by online employers. Companies transitioning to working remotely, have created new remote work positions to respond to the currently increasing demand for remote workers. This would not only increase the online
workforce but also, provide jobs and income-generating opportunities to people who are currently facing financial difficulties in the wake of this pandemic.

The Work Online Dominica program is timely, as there is a lot more reliance and emphasis on Digital Transformation. Country Director for IsraAID Dominica, Ms. Nicole King endorsed having a program that encourages a climate-resilient Dominica with Digital transformation at the helm. The Honorable Senator Cassanni Laville has also expressed that technology has been a dominant driving force that uplifts countries and their people and that he is enthusiastic and excited about the Work Online Dominica cohort 3.

Head of UNDP Dominica, Luis Francisco Thais strongly supports the Government in taking the lead in Digital Transformation and views digital innovation as a means of rebuilding livelihoods and diversifying the economy.

In closing the Digital Transformation Coordinator, Mr. Robert Tonge commended all the partners and stakeholders on putting the effort and commitment to get this programme started, he also encouraged Dominicans to take the first step and apply to be a part of this learning opportunity.
