Thea Lafond Wins Silver Medal at Triple Jump Event in Birmingham
Thea Lafond won Dominica’s first medal at the ongoing 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Friday. The national record holder won silver in the Women’s Triple Jump Event. In her first jump, Lafond achieved 14.39 meters; in her second jump, she got 13.70 meters; and in her third jump, she attained 14.19 meters.
Lafond came second to Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts who set a first-jump record of 14.94 meters, while England’s Naomi Metzger came third with a jump of 14.37 meters. And so Ricketts won gold in the Women’s Triple Jump Event, while Lafond won silver, and Metzger bronze.
The media officer for the Dominica Olympic Committee, Garvin Richards, expressed joy that Dominica secured their first medal at the games, adding that silver was as good as gold given the amount of efforts the winner put into it. Lafond also expressed happiness at her prize, saying she was especially overjoyed because her dad was in the stadium to watch her perform.
President of the Dominica Commonwealth Games Association, Billy Doctrove, said the association is proud of Lafond’s performance and achievement, and urged the other competitors at the games to triple their efforts to win more medals. President of the Dominica Athletics Association, Brendan Williams, tasked athletes representing Dominica to strive harder to bring more medals back home to the country.
