Thomas Letang Justifies Use of DSC Students for Construction Activities
DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang has justified the use of DSC students for reconstruction activities currently ongoing at the college. He said students studying practical courses such as engineering, plumbing, architecture, auto body repair, building construction, and carpentry among others should utilize their skills at the renovation efforts.
Students and staff of DSC embarked on a protest action against the authorities of the college dilapidations across the college nearly three weeks ago. The government stepped in and following a meeting between the college, students, DPSU, and other stakeholders, the authorities resolved that the concerns of the protesters would be addressed.
This resolution gave rise to the reconstruction and renovation efforts ongoing at the tertiary institution. Some people have voiced their concerns that some college staff and students are involved with the reconstruction activities, but Letang said this is beneficial given that students studying practical courses will have the opportunity to utilize their skills.
He noted that when youths are now allowed to practise what they learn in school in a controlled academic environment, they may not be able to demonstrate what they learn. Some parents also agreed that a nation would be more progressive if youths are enabled to engage in practical activities such as construction, engineering, teaching and the sciences for developmental purposes.
