Thomas Letang, Roselyn Paul, and Glenroy Toussaint Point the Way Forward

DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang has expressed disappointment on the government’s apparent disregard for the welfare of Dominicans. Letang alleged that the Skerrit-led administration received massive financial assistance from neighbouring countries from 2017 to 2021 following Hurricane Maria. He alleged that the government did not help out the citizens who were displaced and jobless following the natural disaster despite the huge assistance received from foreign governments for the people.

Meanwhile, the minister in charge of community development, Roselyn Paul, stated that local authorities should play a greater function in community development and local interventions. She noted that local government authorities in collaboration with CREAD should promote government initiatives on climate resilience, disaster management, trainings for volunteers, and welfare supplies for local citizens during and after any natural events.

In a related development, local government commissioner Glenroy Toussaint, revealed that a village council accounting software is in the making for improved finances in local government administration. He said the accounting software will enable villages and local governments to manage their finances more effectively and transparently in the most responsible manner possible.

Toussaint added that using the theme “Engendering community through local government”, local government chairpersons, councillors, and clerks among others will undergo seven training sessions in the month of May to enable them discharge their official duties more efficiently.
