Thomson Fontaine Arrested after More Than Four Years Away From Dominica

Dr. Thomson Fontaine was arrested at the airport over the weekend after his return to the country. The former UWP senator and current economic adviser to the government of South Sudan came into Dominica after a four-year absence and was promptly picked up at the airport.

Fontaine’s arrest was to execute a bench warrant issued against him by former Magistrate Asquith Riviere in 2018. The warrant was issued after the former senator failed to attend two court sessions where he was facing obstruction charges together with Nicholas George, Joshua Francis, Joseph Isaac, and Lennox Linton four years ago.

The warrant remained in force even though Fontaine was away in Africa for four years. The vocal government critic recently condemned the Dominica police authorities for threatening to ban the peaceful street walks organized by Atherton Martin to demand for peace and justice in Dominica.

Fontaine also recently condemned the Skerrit-led administration as being more corrupt compared to former administrations in the country. He scored the governments of Edison James and Pierre Charles as the best in recent decades, saying the government of Roosevelt Skerrit should do more to improve the quality of life for all Dominicans.

The conditions surrounding his arrest remain sketchy but he might face legal charges for the 2018 warrant issued against him.
