Thomson Fontaine Laments Lack of Economic Prosperity after 44 Years
Dr. Thomson Fontaine is presently lamenting the lack of economic prosperity in Dominica after 44 years of political independence. The economist said that since 1978 when the country gained national independence, the political and economic fortunes of the country are still in the woods.
He also expressed worry over the spate of insecurity in the nation in recent years, and blamed the DLP administration for the woes bedevilling the country.
According to Fontaine, Dominica has witnessed more than 15 murders within 10 months. He said that decades ago, no right-thinking Dominican would take up a gun against his fellow citizens. But today under the DLP government, the spate of gun violence has spiked and the average countryman is afraid of sleeping with two eyes closed.
The economist and adviser to the government of Sudan in Africa also blamed the Skerrit-led government for the backwardness in Dominica. He cited the cases of mass unemployment on the lack of vision of the current government, and noted that what is happening in the country now was never envisaged by the past leaders that fought for the peace and economic prosperity of the nation.
Buttressing the facts raised by Fontaine, former DLP press secretary, and entrepreneur, Sean Douglas, said the economic challenges confronting the country are worrisome. He said that in the past 40 years, the youths of Dominica and Portsmouth in particular have been suffering economic hardship. He said the youths of Portsmouth have been left behind in the prosperity of the country and need to be included in the progress of the nation.
According to Douglas, the statements made by Portsmouth MP Ian Douglas that his constituency is well-off in terms of progressive growth and economic prosperity are not true, adding that it is only the residents of Portsmouth that really know where the shoe is pinching them.
