Thomson Fontaine Tackles Minimum Wage, Inflation, and Hike in Food Prices

A financial economist and leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Dr. Thomson Fontaine, is lamenting the economic effects of inflation in the country. Fontaine blamed the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) for their inability to rein in inflation since the past decade, and that all Dominicans are suffering the inefficiency of the present administration.

While noting that the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic worsened the economic system in the country, Fontaine said the DLP government has excerbated the situation by failing to redeem electoral promises. He disclosed that the economic collapse in Dominica has led to 21% of economic decline when compared year to year.

The economist said the present minimum wage is not sufficient to counter the effects of inflation. He stated that Dominicans are finding it harder to survive with the high cost of food and other household commodities due to reduced economic power. He also lamented that many public workers cannot enjoy payment bonuses or job security because they are not promoted to levels where these can be guaranteed.

He noted that what he would love to see is a Dominica where the government is responsive to the current inflation and its effects on the people. A government that would address the low wage situation and put up a concerted effort to bring down the prices of commodities in the market. He said Dominicans are in a “serious problem” because their wages are stagnated while the prices of everything have skyrocketed.
