Transforming Dominica: UWP’s Blueprint for Agriculture and Tourism Growth
The United Workers Party (UWP), under the leadership of Dr. Thomson Fontaine, is set to revitalize Dominica’s agriculture and tourism sectors through an innovative forum slated for the upcoming year. This strategic initiative aims to inject new life into these critical areas, fostering economic growth and national prosperity. The forum is designed as a comprehensive platform, bringing together experts, stakeholders, and community voices to draft a master plan for sector rejuvenation.
Dr. Fontaine has announced that this dynamic forum will not only address current sector challenges but will also prepare the party to implement effective strategies post-election. Acknowledging the government’s efforts in various sectors over the last two decades, Fontaine criticized its overall performance, highlighting low economic growth, rampant youth unemployment, and escalating poverty as key issues. He condemned the alleged mismanagement of the CBI program funds and the government’s failure to prioritize agriculture and public health, which have led to a stagnating economy and disheartened populace.
The UWP leader pointed out the alarming economic indicators, such as a modest 1.5% average growth over 23 years and a youth unemployment rate over 70%. He also noted the disproportionate national debt, consuming a significant portion of tax revenues, as a pressing concern. Fontaine stressed the urgent need to reassess and realign the government’s policies to tackle these multifaceted challenges.
Dr. Fontaine emphasized that a UWP-led government would reinstate agriculture as a national priority, drawing on increased production and exports to rejuvenate the economy. He pledged to support marijuana industry development, agro-processing, and water-based industries, ensuring that farmers receive the necessary aid and attention. Fontaine reassured that the UWP is committed to placing Dominicans at the forefront, advocating for local workers’ dignity and rights, especially in foreign contracts and arrangements.
The UWP’s vision extends to overhauling the healthcare system to provide accessible, high-quality care for all citizens. Fontaine described a transformative educational approach and sports infrastructure development to empower the youth in wealth creation, job provision, and academic success.
Regarding the banking sector, Fontaine lamented its decline under the current administration and vowed to revitalize it, along with enhancing the private sector for national growth. The UWP’s commitment to “Dominicans First” encompasses reviewing international agreements, including those with China, to protect national interests.
Fontaine’s call to action is not limited to the UWP but extends to all Dominicans, urging unity in the quest for a better country. He invites the diaspora to contribute significantly to national development, encouraging them to establish businesses and collaborate on financial initiatives for Dominica’s upliftment.
The UWP presents a comprehensive plan to steer Dominica towards a future marked by sustainable growth, inclusivity, and prosperity. With the upcoming Agriculture and Tourism Forum, the party aims to set the foundation for an actionable roadmap that will guide the nation into a new era of progress and development.
