Truckers Block Entrance at Tarish Pit; Camp Overnight over $250,000 Debt

Drivers of the Tipper Truckers Association of Dominica (TTAD) blocked entrances to Tarish Pit in Pond Case for the second day running over six months salary owed them. The drivers also camped overnight in pursuit of their industrial action, cooking food on open fires to press home their demands. They said they are owed about $250,000.

TTAD Treasurer Everson Magloire and President Anton Laville said the Ministry of Public Works had been of immense support over the months, but the employer of the truck drivers had not been helpful in any significant manner. The name of the company is Sotradom and it is owned by Jack Ghadakhan.

Many of the irate drivers complained that they owe bank loans and that the banks have been on their necks for months on end. They said they are finding it increasingly hard to feed their families and pay their rents because of their owed salaries. Magloire said Ghadakhan had made several promises to pay the salaries without making good on his promises, and they are “fed up”.

The truckers said the projects embarked upon by Ghadakhan remain progressive, but they feel left out since they are owed months of salaries. How long the truck drivers will block the two Tarish Pit entrances remains unknown, but they seemed resolute to continue with their industrial strike until their payment demands are met.
