TUD to Field Contenders for Elections; Reveal Party Leaders on Nomination Day

Team Unity Dominica (TUD) has resolved to contest the December 6 snap elections despite calls by opposition groups to boycott the elections. The newest political party in Dominica also disclosed that it will showcase its party leaders and contenders after Friday, November 18, Nomination Day. This was revealed by Carlos Charles, TUD’s assistant general secretary.

Charles disclosed that the party has just elected its political leader after a private conference for delegates – but the leader, slate of aspirants, and the number of seats to vie for will be revealed after Nomination Day.

Team Unity Dominica intends to contest enough seats to form the next government and at the appropriate time after the Nomination Day we will present our candidates, the leader, and the recent polls which we conducted to the general public.

Carlos Charles, TUD’s Assistant General Secretary

According to Charles, TUD agrees with opposition parties and democratic stakeholders that PM Roosevelt Skerrit’s December 6 snap election call is dubious and mischievous, but it is useless to fight the seeming injustice through election boycott. He said withdrawing from the polls is a failed tactic, and that the best way to beat an enemy is by taking the fight to his doorstep.

We’re entering a battle against a giant [Skerrit] in Caribbean politics, not just Dominica, but it is best to let the people of the Island decide their destinies at the polls. We know the decks are stacked against us, but we enter knowing that the people ultimately decide. It will do Dominicans better by having the parties participate in the elections than abstaining from it.

Carlos Charles, TUD’s Assistant General Secretary

The TUD commended opposition parties for planning rallies and other peaceful demonstrations in the country but expressed fears that unscrupulous elements may hijack the process.

The rally is being masked as no election without reform, but the idea of violence which is being sneaked under the table we don’t want to be a part of that.

Carlos Charles, TUD’s Assistant General Secretary

He also debunked reports that TUD is being funded by clandestine government agents, noting that party members and party supporters fund its operations.
