The government has revealed that PCR tests confirmed three positive COVID-19 cases in Dominica in the last 21 days. According to national epidemiologist Dr. Shalauddin Ahmed, the three cases were not transmitted or infected within the country – they were all imported cases. He however noted that presently, there are only two positive cases in Dominica at the St. James Isolation Unit.
Ahmed urged all Dominicans to not let down their guards at the decline of COVID-19 incidents in the country. He tasked everyone to continue using face masks and observing other safety protocols such as handwashing and social distancing among others. He said the government will continue to guard the country’s borders to ensure that no positive coronavirus case slips into the country.
The national epidemiologist also urged Dominicans to get the COVID-19 vaccination since this would protect them from the pandemic. But in his reaction, financial consultant Louis Robinson, said COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers should change their narrative on how they market the drugs since the vaccines only reduces the negative effects of infection but does not actually prevent infections.
According to Robinson, vaccines do not prevent coronavirus infection, but only boosts the immunity of a vaccinated individual to fight the infection. To this end, he said drugmakers should modify the selling points of the drugs to therapeutics, and to not label them as a vaccine. He said therapeutics treat diseases, but vaccines prevent it; and that since current COVID-19 vaccines do not prevent infection with the disease, they should not be promoted as actual vaccines.
