Two Dominicans & Seven Haitians Arrested Aboard a Migrant Ship in Scotts Head
Two Dominicans and seven Haitians have been arrested aboard a migrant ship named “One Shot” by security agencies in Scotts Head. According to Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, the open keel vessel was intercepted by the Coast Guard and the nine occupants arrested for illegal migration.
Carbon said the detainees have been put at a government quarantine facility in Portsmouth while police continue their investigations into the case. The impounded vessel has been moored at the Fond Cole jetty pending the determination of the matter by the authorities. It remains unclear if the arrested passengers will be charged to court after police completes their investigations.
The police PRO said the incident happened on Monday, March 22, at about 12 pm and that the vessel is powered by a 60-horsepower Yahama engine nearly four nautical miles west of Scotts Head. What the two Dominicans and the seven Haitians are doing on the waters is still unknown and it is still unclear whether they were coming into the country or actually leaving the country.
There have been numerous cases of illegal entry and exit from Dominica to the extent that the government has launched several campaigns to arrest the unwholesome development. Government officials said illegal entry and exit in Dominica exposes the country to untraceable crimes and heightened cases of COVID-19 transmissions. The government has increased its sensitization programmes and security apparatuses to curb the situation to safeguard the health and security of the populace.
