Two St. Martin Primary School students snagged two of the first three positions in the 2022 Grade Six National Examination (G6NA) released on Monday. Eleven-year-old Danelle Ferreira occupied the first position and 12-year-old Makayla Horsford came third – while 12-year-old Jonathan Theohille of St. Mary’s Primary School came second.
Danelle, whose mother is a teacher, thanked her parents and school teachers for supporting through her studies. Her mother, Anne Marie Ferriera, said she always knew her daughter is brilliant; and she attributed her success to her own intervention as a teacher. She said she had always helped her Danelle with her academics since she was in Grade K through Grade 6.
“I am a teacher by profession and it’s something that I expected, because of the amount of work that Danelle put into her studies,” Anne Marie said. “At the end of every term, a parent receives a report card and on that report card you see areas where your child is weak. What do you do as a parent? Are you going to wait for the teacher who has 30+ in her class to address that issue? The onus is on you as parents to do something to assist your child.”
Danelle said she looks forward to attending Convent High School when the new academic year begins.
Jonathan Theophille who came second in the G6NA and plans to attend St. Mary’s Academy in the new academic year thanked his parents and teachers for helping him to pass the examination. He said his teachers and mother helped him to work hard in his studies before preparing for the examination. He said he wants to become a ship captain when he grows into adulthood.
Makayla Horsford also thanked her parents and school teachers for their efforts in making her succeed. She wants to go to Convent High School and to become a paediatrician when she grows up. She encouraged other students to not give up on their dreams and to work hard to make their parents and community proud of their education.
A total of 840 wrote the G6NA on June 23-24, 2022. Given the amount of success recorded in the examination, the government promises to give scholarship to students who score 18-20 points. Bursaries will also be awarded to those who score 16-17 points. Based on the records, a total of 78 students will be awarded scholarship and 93 given bursaries. The scholarship amount is $1,000 and the bursary amount is $700.
