Two Young Ladies Singlehandedly Clean Benjamin Park in Portsmouth
Two young ladies singlehandedly cleaned Benjamin Park in Portsmouth. Anielia Viville and Meekella Joseph on Community Day cleaned out debris and litters from the entire Benjamin Park without any motivation or help from anyone. The young women said they were happy to give back to the society and expressed joy that they were able to do something meaningful to the society.
Anielia is a first former at the Seventh Day Adventist School (A.W.S.D.A) and Meekella is also a first former at St. Johns Academy. Aniella first got the idea for community cleaning after speaking with one of her teachers, and Meekella decided to join with her when they discussed the task. They said the afternoon heat made the manual labour difficult for them since it was the first time they would be doing such, but they were happy after reviewing the cleanlinesss they had brought about in the park four hours later.
“Cleaning the park with just my friend was not too exhausting but at the end I must admit we were tired,” Aniella said. “The heat and manual labor wasn’t an easy task. However, at the end of the day we were elated to see such a great difference we made in four hours.”
Although they had hoped that passersby would join them to do the work, they were disappointed that no one did although the entire exercise was a complete success. The youths said it is important for youths and adults everywhere to maintain good personal hygiene and environmental sanitation. They cautioned people against throwing litters on the streets or in gutters or do things that could create environmental pollution and degration.
Jenny Polydore, the owner of YAZZ Variety, a variety store, appreciated the girls for their good gesture and provided them with beverages while praising them for their humanitarian efforts. She enjoined others to do the same to keep the environment clean. Aniella and Meekella said they would love to clean Benjamin Park every year, and look forward to another opportunity next year.
“This was the first time I participated in a cleanup,” Meekella said. “Giving back to my community felt fulfilling and I look forward to another activity like this one.”
