Unavailability of “A Levels” Exams at DSC Responsible For Lack of Scholars
Dr. Lennox Honychurch, a reputable historian and member of the Commonwealth of Dominica Commonwealth Scholars Alumni Association (CDCSAA), said that unavailability of “A Levels” examinations at the Dominica State College (DSC) is responsible for the reducing numbers of Commonwealth scholars in the country.
Honychurch made this submission at the official launch of CDCSAA in the conference room at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
CDCSAA director, Joanne George, disclosed that one of the major objectives of the association is to publicize the Commonwealth Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund has existed for about 60 years with only 28 Dominican beneficiaries so far. George said this situation must change and that more Dominicans will benefit from the fund so far it is widely publicized within and outside the island country.
Honychurch, who is one of the past beneficiaries of the fund, blamed the situation on the unavailability of A Levels at the DSC. He lamented that Dominica remains the only OECS country that has scrapped the examination which formerly held at the DSC campus.
“We are lagging behind because you’ve got to go and get your three A Levels, and this is something we really must attempt to fix because it is really holding us back in relation to our Commonwealth and other Commonwealth and British associated scholarships,” Honychurch said.
Other Dominican beneficiaries of the Commonwealth Scholarship Fund programme include Dr. Valda Henry and Dr. Ian Blanchard.
