UWI-Coventry Institute Launches For Entrepreneurial Growth
The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of Coventry in England have collaborated to establish the UWI-Coventry Institute for Industry-Academic Partnership. The new institution is targeted to increase innovations and entrepreneurial initiatives across the Caribbean.
The institution will drive economic development throughout the Caribbean, and this will complement UWI’s existing programmes in the same focal areas. Taking advantage of economic partnerships, the new UWI-Coventry institute will leverage on numerous researches, innovations, entrepreneurship, skill commercialisation, and university-industry collaborations.
Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, said the university remains dedicated to demonstrating that the marriage of academics and entrepreneurship can drive economic growth. He however lamented that the Caribbean region has not obtained consistent economic growth in a measurable manner despite all efforts borne out of entrepreneurial engagement, public policy advancement, and macro-economic stabilisation.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Coventry, Professor John Latham, disclosed that his university is frequently rated as one of the best universities in the world in areas of technological innovations and entrepreneurships. He said the university is constantly working with other institutions around the globe to promote innovative entrepreneurial successes.
Other key personalities at the launch of the UWI-Coventry Institute for Industry-Academic Partnership include Dr. Graham King of the Faculty of Engineering at The UWI, St. Augustine campus; Dr. Luz Longsworth, Principal of the Open Campus; and Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Global Affairs at The UWI among other notable figures in the academia.
