Given the scheduled Creole Symposium which will be coming up shortly at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica, the university has perfected plans to teach Creole/Kweyol language as a way of reviving the full adoption of the fading medium.
Dr. Barry Casimir and Dr. Kimone Joseph of UWI noted that Creole/Kweyol is no longer a scorned language spoken by illiterates, but a national language that is almost gaining global acceptance at all levels of life. They revealed that UWI intends to give the learning and adoption of Creole language the same level of prominence given to all other programmes undertaken at the institution.
They added that many people have registered to study and improve their proficiency at the use of the language and the cultural norms evolving from the language. According to them, participants have also begun to use the language among themselves as a form of communication to perpetuate its use among the general populace.
In his reaction, Dr. Gregory Rabess identified some of the factors working against the modern acceptance of the language among the new generation of youths in Dominica. According to the poet and musician, the colonial mindset of Dominicans, the faulty educational system, and the prejudice of the emerging generation are some factors militating against the revival and adoption of the Creole/Kweyol language.
