UWP Appoints Three Women and a Man to the House of Assembly
The UWP has appointed three women and a man to the House of Assembly which resumes on February 10. The opposition party forwarded the names of the women and man to President Charles Savarin for ratification in accordance with Section 34 (1) (b) of the constitition. Section A of the same constitution mandates the DLP to forward names of appointees to the president.
The constitution provides that the ruling party shall appoint five senators to the House and the Opposition shall appoint four senators.
Those appointed by UWP’s Leader Lennox Linton are –
- Francisca Joseph
- Nurse Annette Sanford
- Ernie Lawrence Jno Finn
- Clement “Clemo” Marcellin Jr
All the appointees lost the last election when they contested. Jno Finn contested for Castle Bruce but lost, Joseph contested for La Plaine and lost, Sanford contested the chieftaincy of the Kalinago Territory and lost, and Marcellin Jr lost Vieille Case constituency to PM Roosevelt Skerrit.
UWP leader Linton however said the four were chosen based on agreement of party leaders. He said the four members represented youth and experience. “We are looking forward to their contributions in the House of Assembly and we are confident that they will give a very good contribution,” he said.
Monelle Williams-Jno Baptiste, Isaac Baptiste, Felix Thomas, and Ronald Charles who replaced Dr. Thomson Fontaine among the other senators who occupied the House of Assembly from 2015 to 2019 did not return to the legislative chamber.
