UWP Files Petition To Have Election Results Overturned In 10 Constituencies
The United Workers Party (UWP) has filed a petition in court to have election results in 10 constituencies nullified. The opposition party said the December 6 general elections were marred with various irregularities. Although the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won by a landslide margin of 18 to 3 seats, the UWP accused the government of bribing Dominicans in the diaspora to return home to vote in the elections.
The UWP is asking the court that election results in the following areas be overturned:
- St. Joseph
- Mahaut
- Morne Jaune
- La Plaine
- Castle Bruce
- Salybia
- Roseau Valley
- Roseau Central
- Roseau South
- Wesley constituency
After the election results were announced and the UWP found they lost the elections, opposition leader Lennox Linton said the party would head to the courts to challenge the election results. He stated that the party had not had much lucks with the courts in recent years, but it is the only legal option which the party must continue to explore. He said the opposition is determined to right all the wrongs that the government had done.
Observer teams from the Commonwealth, OAS and CARICOM however declared the elections free and fair.
In his New Year message to the people, UWP leader Linton tasked the people rise up in defense of fairness and equality. He encouraged the people that Dominica must be set free from the clutches of a clueless government.
“Recognize your uniqueness, embrace the power of your humanity, leverage these blessings in carrying out your responsibility to help take back control of Dominica from the few whose greed and lust for power drive them to demonize and rip apart the patriots who stand for the best Dominica for all Dominicans,” Linton charged.
