The United Workers Party (UWP) has highlighted what they would have done to eliminate the spread of COVID-19 in Dominica. Speaking through the Health and Wellness representative for the UWP, Anette Sanford, the opposition said they have a foolproof plan for defeating coronavirus in the country.
Sanford said part of what the opposition party would have done is to restrict the socialization of people at public events such as churches, parties, funerals, and sporting facilities. She said the UWP would have also shut down schools in urban and suburban areas such as Mahaut, Belfast, and Jimmit among other places. Sanford said the opposition will have closed schools in these areas for at least one month to prevent the mass gathering of pupils.
The Kalinago Affairs representative in the opposition also stated that the UWP would have established a curfew between 8 pm to 5 am in COVID-19 cluster areas or communities where coronavirus has been reported mostly. She went on to add that the opposition recommends the closure of some bars, restaurants, churches and hotspot areas in order to beat the transmission of the disease.
Nurse Sanford also wants everyone going to the Princess Margaret Hospital and health clinics across the country to undergo compulsory COVID-19 tests. She said this will facilitate the diagnosis of infected people and aid the detection of positive cases in time before patients become symptomatic. She went on to advise that the government should administer Vitamin C supplements frequently to school children to help them remain healthy against the pandemic.
“It is very important that information is disseminated to you for your own good [as] is necessary,” Sanford remarked. “We as a team find it very important that you get the necessary information that you need so that you can make an informed decision especially in a crisis or emergency.”
