UWP Outlines Areas of Key Reforms for Urgent Implementation
The UWP has outlined areas of key electoral and political reforms for “urgent” implementation. The opposition party said the current electoral system is defective and must be modified in key aspects to improve the social and economic standards of the citizens.
Key areas the UWP recommends urgent reforms include –
- Enforcement of the rule of law
- Provisions against bribery, cheating, impersonation, illegal voting and election offenses in general
- Access to state-owned media for the opposition
- Accurate register of all voters and issuance of voter ID cards
- Reform of finance sources for campaign purposes
- Enablement of eligible voters resident overseas to vote inside Dominica
UWP leader Lennox Linton said implementation of the above key reforms among others would facilitate a free and fair election in the country. The opposition party contends that the December 6, 2019 was marred with various irregularities and accused the ruling DLP of electoral frauds.
The opposition said the DLP failed to implement electoral reforms that should have ensured a free and fair election, and so wants the election results nullified in 10 constituencies. The UWP has also headed to court to demand for the invalidation of the election victory. The party published a report titled “Not Free, Not Fair: Not Free From Fear” mirroring the inconsistencies in the past general elections.
“We have a responsibility to reform our electoral system, not to deform it, and we continue to advocate in that regard”, Linton said.
