UWP to Create a Business Register to Assist Small Traders; Help the Elderly

The new leadership of the UWP has revealed plans to help small traders, students, and the elderly in Dominica. The major opposition party is also planning to lend a helping hand to all UWP supporters and non-supporters in a manner that will give them visibility on the Island.

According to opposition leader Thomson Fontaine, small traders and professionals as well as students will be required to list their names and services in a small business register to be created. The business registry will be accessible to the Dominican public – just like Yellow Pages – so that employers can look up the names of people and contact them for various job offers.

Fontaine also said UWP executives will execute an “all doors campaign” which will entail travelling to the nooks and crannies of Dominica to interface with UWP supporters. The effort is geared at winning the support, and enlisting the assistance of party supporters, toward building a stronger future for the country. He said the leaders will appeal Dominicans everywhere to ramp up support for the UWP.

Fontaine said the opposition is not limiting itself to establishing a small business directory for its supporters, but it will also be offering financial assistance to vulnerable people to keep them bolstered up in the Dominican society. He decried a situation where the ruling DLP party had always discriminated against UWP supporters in areas of housing, employment, and education among others.

The economist revealed that two organizations have agreed to provide sponsorship for some of the programmes outlined by the UWP to help the masses. He disclosed that the party will also be reaching out to Dominicans in the diaspora as well as friendly governments to fund efforts to alleviate poverty on the Island.

“Let us not view each other as political opponents, but view each other simply as Dominicans,” he stated. “Let us lend a hand to each other, let us support each other, let us encourage each other and let us be there for each other. There is a fight that must be fought and it is bigger than any one party.”

Meanwhile, UWP general secretary Nicholas George and UWP St. Joseph Constituency Association chairman Bernie Ryan among others continue to cast votes of no confidence on the administration of PM Roosevelt Skerrit. The condemned the recent snap elections which the DLP won without implementation of electoral reforms and also criticized Skerrit for muzzling the opposition in Dominica. Lennox Linton and Sean Douglas lent their voices to this criticism.
