UWP Urges Supporters to Step Forward With Evidence of Voting Frauds
The United Workers Party (UWP) is urging party supporters to step forward with evidence of voting frauds in the last general elections. Former party leader Edison James told party loyalists in Castle Bruce that the evidences will help the courts to declare the results of the December 6, 2019 election null and void.
The UWP had earlier filed a complaint in court alleging voting irregularities in 10 constituencies. The opposition said voting results in St. Joseph, Mahaut, Morne Jaune, La Plaine, Castle Bruce, Salybia, Roseau Valley, Roseau Central, Roseau South and Wesley were fraudulent and irregular.
According to James, the UWP is confident that the court will rule in their favour once sufficient evidences show that the DLP cheated in the last election.
However, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called for all political parties and stakeholders embrace peace and work towards rebuilding the country. He said it is distracting to emcumber oneself with legal tussles in the face of nation-building. He asked all parties to work together for the good of the island and let election issues remain in the past where it belongs.
But the leadership of the UWP would not agree to this. Nicholas George, general secretary of the UWP, said the party will proceed with court action even as it is important to revisit the Marigot and Salisbury incidents.
“The Marigot incident will be addressed, but Salisbury cries for attention”, George said, and tasked party supporters to be “brave and come out to give evidence”.
A few days before the general election, there were reports that armed people stormed the village of Salisbury and fired tear-gas in the early hours of the morning. There were reports of people running helter-skelter from the fumes of the gas, with children and aged folks getting injured in the pandemonium. Gunshots were also said to be fired and three people were sustained injuries.
