UWP’s Thomson Fontaine and DFP Criticize the Dominica Government Over Electoral Reform

The United Workers Party (UWP) and the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) continue to criticize and challenge the DLP administration. The major opposition parties contend that they boycotted the last snap elections because it was sham in the absence of electoral reforms.

UWP political leader, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, and DFP president Johnson Boston said implementing electoral reforms before the 2022 snap elections would have eliminated the inconsistencies observed with the 2019 general election.

Fontaine contended that the opposition would continue to consider the Skerrit government as illegitimate and anti-people until electoral reform is implemented. While Boston is less critical this time around, he enjoined all Dominicans to join hands to uplift democracy and make it rewarding for all in the country.

He tasked leaders to represent the people well, and tasked lawmakers to come up with bills that address the needs of their constituencies. He noted that Dominica belongs to everyone regardless of political party affiliations, and that public debates should be civil and helpful to the entire people involved. In his own reaction, the host of Global View on Q55 FM, Sheridan Gregoire, said civil groups should be enlisted into the electoral commission for a more transparent and representative government agency. He said alllowing human rights groups to join the commission will eliminate political manipulations and authoritarian rule in Dominica.
