WAWU Recalls It Has Responded To Calls for Sunday Workday in the Past

The Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) recalls it has responded to calls for Sunday workday in the past. The Dominica Employment Federation (DEF) is repeating its push to have Sunday made a workday following a review of the Employment Act.

WAWU President Kertiste Augustus said DEF seems to make this call every two years, and that the union had stated its position to these calls in time past.

However, DEF insists that all they are after is to have the Employment Act under which public servants work restructured. The federation said public employees will still be entitled to one day of rest each week, and that workers will be at liberty to determine if they want to miss work for either Saturday or Sunday to attend religious programmes.

The proposal has generated lots of public reactions, with members of the public saying the move is only targeted to benefit employers and not employees. The proposal is still under review with many segments of the nation weighing in on the matter.
